The best of Instagram: March 2014

It’s kind of ironic how I have a travel blog, and yet I feel like I’m always behind when it comes to the latest social media. To be fair, I do currently live in Germany, Germans just aren’t as enthusiastic when it comes to social media. A lot of Germans I’ve met have such a fear of having too much personal information on Facebook that most of them don’t even use their names, and instead opt for shortened versions of their name or cutting their first name into two like “Mar Cus” or “Mel Anie” or something. It’s safe to say that things like Twitter and Instagram aren’t as popular here as they are back home.

In fact, when I was home last summer, I was so surprised how big Instagram is. Apparently Facebook isn’t even cool anymore, and a lot of people have already began ditching it to solely use Instagram. Clearly I was out of the loop since I didn’t even have an Instagram account until a few months ago (that’s also around when I learned the purpose of hashtags and all of a sudden, Twitter became a lot more interesting) But just as I learned all about Instagram and hashtags and selfies, now Snapchat and Vine are all the rage…

The madness never ends!

I have to admit, I’ve become slightly addicted to Instagram recently so I thought it would be fun to start a new feature on my blog, where at the end of every month, I share my favourite photos from my Instagram from that month! (And for those of you who have Instagram, check me out and follow me at: michelleineurope)

(By the way, it’s not quite the end of March, but I’ll be in Berlin this weekend so I’m posting this month’s favourites early!)

When it’s sunny in Munich, everyone flocks to the beer garden by the lake. It’s such a great place to relax and have what the Bavarians call a “Mass” (they drink beer by the litre!) Having not yet adapted to all the Bavarian ways, here’s my halb Mass (half litre)…cheers to sunny weather!

Something really exciting was having one of my best hometown friends, Miriam move back to Zurich recently to work as a graphic designer! So excited that not only is she a short bus/train ride away from Munich, but she came to visit me at one of the best times possible….to watch the Canadian mens hockey game bring home gold!! GOOOO CANADA!!

Sundays are the best time in Munich to go to museums because they all only cost 1 euro! I particularly liked the knights at the Bavarian National Museum.

First time making chocolate covered strawberries. They may not look all that pretty, but trust me, they were sooooo delicious!

One good thing that comes out of having one of your favourite pairs of jeans ripping, is the excuse you have to buy a new pair! After seeing this pair of acid wash jeans from Zara, I just had to buy it! And another plus, it goes well with my wallet!

I’m still amazed by how cheap grocery shopping is in Germany. Can you believe all of this only costs less than 10 euros?

It was so sunny out I couldn’t help but take a selfie 😛

I never thought to bring my summer clothes from Regensburg, so I had another excuse to go buy some new sandals so that my feet could enjoy the sunny weather as well! Loving these from Reef….plus it’s handmade in Guatemala and a portion of the proceeds go to help their community. I love companies with a conscious agenda!

With my flight booked for Italy in May, it’s extra motivation to hit the gym!

There’s nothing better than spending a sunny day by the lake (unless it’s a beach of course!). Luckily there’s tons of lakes in and around Munich!

Hey stranger! I know that Instagram has become huge these days. I was most fascinated by your grocery shopping items, Michelle 🙂 I was trying to, and I think with a fair amount of success, figure out some items in the picture I wasn’t initially sure of 🙂

Haha Mike…good way of practicing your German 😛 I love grocery shopping in Germany! You can find so much good food for way less than in Canada! They’re also really into bio foods here!

I loved this Instagram recap! And it’s always interesting to hear how certain things are viewed differently in other cultures. Sometimes it can feel that social media is “so global” but the truth of the matter is not everyone uses it the same way that we do here in the States! 🙂

Thanks! 🙂 Yes, very true! It seems like what sort of social media is popular is different in different countries as well! Like Whatsapp is huge in Germany but don’t have too many friends back home who use it!

I love your smile. It’s so adorable and cute. How good was the beer :D? I didn’t know you are a big fan of beer! 😀 I never drink alcohol … 😛

I didn’t know you didn’t drink Agness! Normally I’m not a fan of beer since I find it too bitter, but in Bavaria, “Radler” is really popular…which is a mix of beer and lemonade….soo good! In Berlin they also have this beer where they add a sweet syrup into it and makes it taste amazing!!

Mmmm I would do bad things to sink my teeth into those chocolate covered strawberries!! It sounds like I’m the same as you when it comes to social media… I don’t have Instagram but I can see how it’s a good accessory to travel blogs. I think I might join you!

They were so good, I made to make them almost every day for the rest of the week! 😛 and I hope you do make an instagram! It can get a bit addicting though 😛

Haha! I must have German blood somewhere inside of me because my FB name is split into two as well! 😀
